ENGINEERING 4.0 INSTEAD OF INDUSTRY 4.0

11 Aug 2017

Everyone is talking about Industry 4.0, hardly anyone about Engineering 4.0 – yet we are already well on our way to an evolution of the CAD-world. A decentralized, networked production is set to change the future: Design engineers need to reveal data to various company departments, partners and end customers. However, at a lower level, there’s an integration of product management and simulation which would be the so-called Engineering 3.0. As a distributer for used TRUMPF punching machinespress brakes and laser cutting systems, we, the I-H&S GmbH, inform about current topics of the Industry 4.0 and take a closer look at companies’ considerable backlog when it comes to Engineering 4.0.

COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE

The integration of Computer Aided Design (CAD), data management and simulation provides many advantages. Such a merger results in the consolidation of data and the acceleration of development cycles. However, experience shows that around a third of companies forego the integration so they can use a pure CAD instead. However, this fear of change will no longer be viable due to increasingly globalized markets and the resulting pressure to be faster in every development stage. A key component of the transformation would be the model-based system engineering (MBSE), which contains all product requirements and specifications and coordinates its whole life cycle. At this point, all design tools grow together.

Engineering 4.0 statt Industrie 4.0

ENGINEERING 4.0 GOES EVEN FURTHER

The aim of the development would be the opening up of the process in a technical as well as in an organizational matter – Engineering 4.0 combines this exact aim with the idea of system engineering. In this context, this openness of systems needs to be practiced both inside and outside of the company. Inside the company, because there’s still a widespread traditional departmental thinking.  But these fragmentations are long outdated and prevent an integrated engineering. And that’s just the beginning: in times of Industry 4.0, customers and suppliers are natural partners in the innovation process. For example, to individualize products, they intervene in the procedure at any time – in that sense the trend towards batch size one seems unstoppable. Now, the question arises how a future CAD-workstation will look like. Apart from existing desktop work, cloud-based solutions are increasing. By using them, employees will have access to data – whenever, wherever they want. In this process, valuable customer feedback can be included into decision-making.
